The Life of CHARLES KIMPEL

Charles Kimpel enlisted as Charles Kimbel, age 24 in Company K of the 5th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment on April 20, 1861 for a three-month enlistment. On the expiration of the term of service, the regiment was ordered to Harrisburg, where, on the 25th of July, the men were paid and honorably discharged. On August 26, 1864 Charles Kimpel enlisted again, this time in Company G 204th Pennsylvania Volunteers Regiment which was converted into Battery G of the 5th Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery and mustered into federal service. The regiment fought several small battles with Moseby's Confederate raiders in 1864. In June 1865 with the war over, the regiment was ordered back to Pittsburgh and mustered out of service on June 30th, 1865.
