The Life of Mayor WILLIAM WALLACE IRWIN

Pittsburgh’s first Whig Mayor, William W. Irwin was of Scots-Irish descent and was educated both at Allegheny College and the Western University of Pennsylvania (now U. of Pitt). Prior to his Mayoral term, Irwin was elected and served as Allegheny County’s District Attorney. He married twice, both into prominent political families, and his time as Mayor became a stepping stone to his successful election as Representative for the U.S. Congress.
