The Life of WILLIAM FREW

William Frew was a partner in the pioneer oil-refining firm of Lockhart & Frew. He was employed with James McCully, a wholesale grocer, in 1859 when he and a fellow employee, Charles Lockhart, formed a partnership to operate Pittsburgh's first petroleum refinery in continuing use. Lockhart & Frew was absorbed by the Standard Oil Co. in 1876, and the partners became chief executives of the new subsidiary. Like many others of his time he had other diverse business interests, and was regarded as well as cultured, charitable, and religious. He was Corporator of the Cemetery, as were three other Frews.
