The Life of WILLIAM BARCLAY FOSTER SR

Father of composer, Stephen C. Foster. Born in Virginia, he became a prominent businessman and land owner in Pittsburgh, including all of what is now Lawrenceville. William Barclay Foster Founded Lawrenceville in 1814 and named it after James Lawrence, Naval hero of the recent War of 1812. He was a Pennsylvania state Legislator and Mayor of Allegheny City (now Pittsburgh's North Side).
