The Life of WILLIAM FALCONER

WILLIAM FALCONER (1850-1928). Born in Scotland, Falconer was a celebrated horticulturist who studied at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Allegheny Cemetery hired him as Superintendent after his work developing Schenley Park, and from 1903 until his death he resided in the former Schoenberger mansion on the property. The mansion was razed in the mid 20th century but once stood near Section 9. Falconer focused on refined ornamental plantings and elegant landscape design. His efforts to retain the Cemetery's original rural garden framework earned him recognition by the Association of American Cemetery Superintendents and were considered the crowning jewel of his accomplishments. His memorial is decorated with carved reliefs of Scottish Thistle, a tribute to his heritage and his life's work.
