William ‘Clem’ Maher, 90, Retired oil refinery employee; WWII veteran Published: Friday, October 08, 2010 William ”Clem“ Maher, 90, of Concord, a retired oil refinery employee, died Oct. 5 at home. Born in Springfield, he lived there for 30 years before moving to Concord in 1950. Mr. Maher was employed by the Sinclair Oil Co. in Trainer that became British Petroleum before his retirement. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European Theater of Operation with the ”Big Red One“ First Infantry Division and maintained friendships with Europeans he helped liberate from the Germans. Mr. Maher was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6835 and American Legion Post 618. For more than 60 years Mr. Maher was a member of Elam United Methodist Church in Concord where he was superintendent of the cemetery for more than 40 years, served as head usher and president of the board of trustees and was active with Methodist Men. An artist, he once studied with Carolyn Wyeth. Mr. Maher enjoyed woodworking, among other hobbies. He was the father of the late Robert William Maher. Survivors: Wife of more than 64 years, Marie T. Carlin Maher; daughter, Diane L. Bless; brother, George T. Maher; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Service: 11:30 a.m. Monday, Elam United Methodist Church, 1073 Smithbridge Road, Concord where Veterans of Foreign Wars service will be held at 11:20 a.m. Visitation: 10-11:20 a.m. Monday at the church. Contributions: Elam Church Endowment Fund, 1073 Smithbridge Road, Glen Mills, PA 19342. Arrangements: Rigby of Chadds Ford, Concord.
