On Wednesday, August 23, 2017, Ann Woolfolk Austin, beloved wife of the late James S. Austin, Jr.; dear mother to Peter S. Austin (Heather), James D. Austin, and Elizabeth Austin Holden (Michael); Nan to her grandchildren: William C. Austin, Natalie L. Austin, Noah H. Davis, Emma C. Davis, Aaron R. Davis, Austin C. Holden and Alexander S. Holden; and Aunt Ann to many nieces and nephews. Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Anna Childs Woolfolk and Arthur Peter Woolfolk; and her brother, Thomas Howe Woolfolk. Ann took great pride in her role as mother and grandmother, and was the center of the family - hosting family dinners, leading beach vacations, and pursuing adventures with grandchildren. The last 20 years of her life were dedicated to exploring the world with family and friends, especially more remote and less developed countries, as evidenced by an extensive collection of trip mementos. Ann's love of life and zeal to learn was complemented by a diverse network of friends, young and old. Prior to her retirement, Ann was Director of Development for The Children's Institute of Pittsburgh. She was a well-respected and accomplished professional within the Pittsburgh fundraising and foundation community, and was honored by the Pittsburgh chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals with a lifetime achievement award. Ann was a prior board of trustees member and board chair/President of The Ellis School and The Children's Institute (formerly the Home for Crippled Children and the Rehabilitation Institute of Pittsburgh). Other board activities included, The FISA Foundation, Staunton Farm Foundation, and The Neighborhood Academy. She was a lifelong parishioner and member of the Vestry of Calvary Episcopal Church. Ann was a knowledgeable and talented gardener, and an active member of the Garden Club of Allegheny County. Ann also enjoyed the arts and supported The Pittsburgh Opera, Pittsburgh Symphony, Dance Council, and Broadway series to name a few. Friends will be received at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS, INC. (freyvogelfuneralhome.com) 4900 Centre Ave. at Devonshire Street on Thursday, August 31, 2017, from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. A service of celebration of the life of Ann Woolfolk Austin will be held at Calvary Episcopal Church on Friday, September 1, 2017, at 11 a.m. Please gather at the church as a private burial service will be held prior in Homewood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests contributions be made in memory of Ann W. Austin to The Ellis School, 6425 Fifth Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15206; Calvary Episcopal Church, 315 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206; or to an organization of your choice.
