The Life of DOUGLAS N. MALONE

MALONE DOUGLAS NEGLEY
Age 61, died on July 25, 2017, of complications after a long battle with Amyloidosis, the blood disease that former Pittsburgh mayor Richard Caligiuri had. Mr. Malone was "Maddog Doug" Malone during his years with WYDD-FM, the free form rock and roll station, from 1973-1975 and chaired the jazz morning show 'Jazz and Things," along with Buck Brice. Mr. Malone ran an electronic music studio, MIDI MASTERS, in the mid to late 80's, that specialized in original soundtracks for such corporate clients as Westinghouse and Rockwell. Mr. Malone had the honor of tuning all the pianos for the Van Cliburn International Competition at the Inn of Mountain Gods, a resort on Mescatero Apache reservation land in Ruidoso, New Mexico, in 1984. At that time he was also a D.J. and operations manager for KOAW-AM, an early freeform classic tracks rock station in Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico. Malone's last big project was as a producer (and player) for Pittsburgh jazz guitar great Jimmy Ponder's last CD, "Somebody's Child," which reached #3 on the Jazz Week airplay charts in June of 2007. Malone moved to Hawaii to pursue his love of Hawaiian slack key guitar. This was where he was diagnosed with the rare, incurable blood disease that took his life. Mr. Malone is the direct descendent of Alexander Negley who settled Highland Park (then known as Negleystown) in 1788. Mr. Negley's original homestead was situated where the Highland Park Reservoir and walkabout is now located. Mr. Malone worked hard to keep the Negley history alive and intact. A memorial party will be held at Portagallos Pepper's N'at, located at 28 Braddock Ave., Braddock, PA 15104 from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday August 20, 2017. Friends and acquaintances are all welcome, and dress is casual. An avid feline lover, Mr. Malone asks that any donations in his name be given to any local animal shelter. He is survived by his friends; his cousins, Skip and Lindsay; and his Maine Coon/Manx cat, Lena. Professional Services trusted to THOMAS M. SMITH FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, Blawnox
