The Life of Maurice B. Dabney Jr.

Maurice B. Dabney, Jr., 93 of the Wynnefield section of Philadelphia, PA, died on Sunday July 2, 2017. Maurice was a graduate of West Philadelphia High School, received his BS from Lincoln University, and was the first African American to graduate from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. He was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and served in the Korean War as a Medical Supply Officer. He followed in his father’s footsteps and owned and operated several pharmacies in the Philadelphia area. Dabney Pharmacies were located at 15th and South Streets, 59th and Spruce Streets, and Thouron Street and Washington Lane. Maurice is preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Norma Lee Dabney, and his sister, Inez Dabney Moore. He is survived by his daughters, Deiadra Lee Dabney, former Rhythm and Blues Editor of Record World Magazine, and Dr. Norma Dabney Roman, former Associate Director of Reading and Language Arts for Harcourt School Publishers; and one devoted grandson, Emory Lee Dabney and his wife, Jean. He is also survived by dozens of loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. Maurice was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., The Guardsmen, and The Men, and he was also a founding member of Delval Golf Club and the Nile Swim Club.
