Obituary for David Fowler

Professor Emeritus David Henry Fowler (92) of Manchester CT, beloved
husband of the late Lois Josephs Fowler, passed away peacefully in his sleep
on Wednesday July 5, 2017. David was born in Barrington, Rhode Island on
September 28, 1924, son of the late Henry and Dorothy Fowler. After
volunteering for service in the Army David served in the European
Expeditionary Force in France as an engineering specialist. After the war
he completed his bachelors degree at Oberlin College and had a career in
journalism that included working on staff at the Hartford Courant. In 1959
David came to Carnegie Mellon University, then Carnegie Institute of
Technology. He received his PH.D in history from Yale University in 1963
and he then spent the rest of his career at Carnegie Mellon. Dr. Fowler was
the acting head of the department for several periods in the 1960s. He taught
courses relating to minorities in American history, the American Presidency,
the development of American Society, business history and advertising,
and the American Constitution. In addition, David was active in numerous
scholarly and social organizations both on and off of the campus. David is
survived by his daughter Denise (Doug) Berczik, step-sons Daniel (Nadine)
and David (Wendy) Josephs, his grandchildren Nicole Bornhorst, Jason
Napolitano, and Amanda Napolitano, four great-grandchildren, his sister
Ann Wahl and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
In addition to his wife, David was predeceased by a brother and two sisters,
his son Henry "Mark" Fowler, his daughter Laurel Lindley and his grandson
Eric Berczik. A private ceremony will be held for David in Pittsburgh Pa.
where he will be laid to rest next to his wife. Contributions may be made to
