The Life of DOROTHY K. HOLMES

Dorothy K. Holmes(1920 - 2017)
Dorothy Kelly Holmes, 96, of Penn Hills, died Sunday, June 11, 2017, in Barnes Place, Latrobe, where she had been residing for the past year. She was born June 27, 1920, in Nanty Glo, a daughter of the late Arthur Ernest Kelly and Jenny Griffith Kelly. She was a member of Hebron United Presbyterian Church, Penn Hills. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Burton S. Holmes, in 2003. She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Ann Schmidt (husband Richard); and her son, B. Griffith (wife Sandra Kiggins Holmes); two grandchildren, Heather Barone and Heath Schmidt (wife Danielle); and three great-grandsons, Bradyn and Alec Barone and Ethan Schmidt. Before her marriage to Burt on June 3, 1944, Dorothy worked as a secretary and as a Red Cross volunteer during World War II. Her volunteerism carried through during her years as a homemaker, when she also volunteered at several nursing homes during those years. Dorothy was accomplished at all the needlework arts, making a quilt a year with every stitch done by hand, as well as knitting, making clothing for the family, working beautiful projects in needlepoint, counted cross stitch, crochet, etc. She was a good cook, but a fabulous baker, noted especially for her pies, a talent she passed down to her daughter.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at WOLFE MEMORIAL INC., 3604 Greensburg Pike, Forest Hills Chapel, 412-731-5001, where service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
Dorothy's family expresses their heartfelt thanks to Barnes Place for the care and affection Dorothy was given during her time there, to Amedisys Hospice Care, for the wonderful caregivers who assisted Dorothy in her final months and made it possible for her to live her final year in an apartment rather than a hospital room, and also to the Charter Oak United Methodist Church visitation team who brightened her day on a regular basis and helped fill the void when she moved from Penn Hills to Latrobe in the final year of her life. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice .
