The Life of Joan Churchill Carpenter

Joan Churchill Carpenter, 86, of Flagler Beach, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2017 at the Windsor of Palm Coast. Joan was born on November 28, 1930 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Ralph Churchill and Ruth Main. As a young woman she married her first husband Peter Williamson Brashears and started a family. After the death of her first husband in 1993 she married Willard Carpenter and had another wonderful union. Joan was very involved in GBMC nearly new sale volunteer for many years. She was also a very talented artist who worked in many mediums including painting, stained glass, knitting, sewing and jewelry making to just name a few. Joan was also an avid bridge player. She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was a "fashionista" always well dressed and adorned in jewelry of her own design. Joan was preceded in death by her first husband, Peter Williamson Brashears in 1993; daughter, Lynn Houtz in 2014. Survivors include her beloved husband, Willard Carpenter of Flagler Beach; children, Ann (Bruce) Bowden of Tucson, AZ; David (Shawn) Brashears of Timonium, MD; sister, Sandra Shield of Richmond, VA; grandchildren, Kristin, Cassie, Eric, Erin, Michael and Matty; great-grandchildren, Hahna, Ava, Teddy, Kai, Zara, Zoe and Henry. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017, 11:00 AM at Flagler Beach United Methodist Church, 1520 S. Daytona Ave., Flagler Beach. She will be buried at West Laurel Hill Cemetery with the rest of her family. Donations in her memory may be made to Alzheimers Association at www.alz.org.
