Doris Hellmund(1918 - 2016)

Doris Hellmund

Born April 20, 1918 in Staten Island, NY, Doris Rumage Hellmund was first enrolled at Miss Lizzie's one room school, and afterwards attended Notre Dame Academy, where she graduated from high school at age 16. Entering college at Pennsylvania State College, where she became a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, and received a Bachelor's degree in Journalism in 1938. Returning to New York, she worked in advertising in Manhattan, and as Heinz Pickle Girl at the New York World's Fair in 1939. It was there she re-met a college friend, Rudolph Hellmund, who was working as an engineer at the Westinghouse exhibit. They dated, fell in love riding the Staten Island Ferry Boat and dancing to Glenn Miller's orchestra. In June 1940 they married, and honeymooned in Bermuda shortly before the US entered World War II. After a year living in Flushing, New York, they moved to Narberth, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia, where their four daughters were born.

Later moves took the family to Wilmette, Illinois, and then Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Doris and Rudy enjoyed a happy, loving marriage until Rudy's death in 1970. As a widow, Doris earned her real estate license and embarked on a very successful 20 year career selling homes for the Scarborough Corporation, After retiring, she later lived at the Weston Club in Marlton, New Jersey, and most recently at Southport Square in Port Charlotte, Florida.

She will be especially missed by her devoted daughters, Lois Bostwick (Laurence), Diane Waronka (Joseph), Arlene Epting (Michael), and Janet Jordan (Robert), her loving nieces, Deborah Hartman and Laurie Vogt, her 'honorary' daughters, Donna Schano and Fran Hahn, her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, grandnieces and nephews. She is also survived by her dear cousins, Shirley and David Frey, and Raymond and Barbara Gotthardt. Among those who will remember and miss her greatly are her many friends and friends of her daughters. All of us who share in the sadness of losing her also share in her legacy of memories, love, wisdom, human values, decency and positive outlook. How blessed we were to have her for so long...though still not long enough.

A private burial will take place in Pittsburgh, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Society of St. Vincent De Paul or Catholic Relief Services would be appreciated.
