The Life of Nicholas Exar

Nicholas L. Exar, 88, of Harrisburg, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Friday December 23, 2016 at Harrisburg Hospital. Born on June 24, 1928 in Norristown, he was the son of the late Louis and Ethel (Lagakos) Exar. Nicholas was a graduate of Norristown High School and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master's Degree in Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a Director for the Comprehensive Health Planning Agency of Western PA. He also worked as a school teacher, for the Pennsylvania Health Department and for the Department of Environmental Resources. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Camp Hill. Nick enjoyed working on projects in the interior and exterior of his home, in his vegetable garden and on restoring and repairing cars. He was an avid bird watcher. He was also a past president of a Lancaster area PTA. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Eve (Koletas) Exar of Harrisburg; two daughters, Elena McCurdy and her husband Doug of Camp Hill and Lynn Exar of Lansdale; a son, Dr. Elliott Exar and his wife Valerie of Rockville, MD; four grandsons, Thomas Walsh of Camp Hill; Neal Exar of Rockville, MD; and Alex and Luke Elnashar of Lansdale; one granddaughter, Laura Exar of Rockville, MD; and a sister, Helen Cummings of Wayne. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday December 30, 2016 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1000 Yverdon Drive, Camp Hill, with Reverend Michael Varvarelis as Celebrant. A viewing will be held in the Cathedral on Friday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service. A graveside service will be held at 12:30 P.M. on Saturday December 31, 2016 in West Laurel Hill Cemetery, 225 Belmont Ave, Bala Cynwyd, PA. Myers-Harner Funeral & Cremation Services, Camp Hill, has been entrusted with funeral services.
