The Life of Roger S. Taylor Jr.
TAYLOR, ROGER SCHOFIELD TAYLOR, Jr., 83, died November 10, 2016 at Bellingham Retirement Community after a courageous battle with brain cancer. He was the husband of Miriam (Mim) Rahauser Taylor, with whom he shared over 60 years of marriage. Born in Delaware County, PA, he was the son of the late Roger S. and Violet G. Taylor. He was a 1951 graduate of Haverford High School and a 1955 graduate of Lehigh University. At Haverford, he was class President and captain of the football and wrestling teams. At Lehigh, he was a member of the varsity wrestling team and the Theta Delta Chi fraternity. He received a BS in Business Administration. Following college, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a 1st Lt. in the 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejune, NC. He was also a "Ranger." After his tour with the Marine Corps, he joined ALCOA (Aluminum Company of America). Over a 36 year career, he held a variety of positions in the Sales Department and Chemical Division. He was Commercial Manager - Chemicals when he retired from ALCOA in 1994. As Roger and Mim raised their four sons over the years, they were very involved in their son's activities, especially wrestling. They both helped to form a sports booster club at Bel Air, MD High School, and Roger helped to start and coach the Bel Air Recreational wrestling program for pre-high school boys. Both organizations are still active today. Roger's sons have all expressed there are just not enough words to describe what a wonderful loving supportive father, dad was to ALL his family. The family was ALWAYS first priority for Dad. Roger had a passion for sailboats since he was a child. He and his family had many adventures sailing the Chesapeake Bay for over 50 years in their 3 sailboats. During retirement, he was a volunteer in a number of organizations. He was an active member of the Greater West Chester Sunrise Rotary Club, the Chester County Historical Society, and a trustee and elder of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. He and Mim enjoyed extensive traveling, especially ship cruises. Family gatherings were always a high priority. A special time was the annual summer vacation at the Outer Banks of NC with family members. Roger also loved his vegetable gardens, especially his prized Brandywine tomatoes which he and Mim enjoyed every season. In addition to Mim, he is survived by brother, Donald B. Taylor, Pensacola, FL; and 4 sons, Roger S. Taylor III and wife, Diane, Levittown, PA; George W. Taylor and wife, Laura, Oakton, VA; David G. Taylor Bel Air, MD, and fiancée, Lisa; Gordon M. Taylor and wife, Maria, Ashburn, VA; 9 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Roger was and will always be loved by his family and friends and greatly admired for his strong unwavering character of goodness, friendship, and especially his love and commitment for his family. He will be deeply missed by all that knew him… "Dad may you rest in peace and in our hearts always." Memorial Services will be held on Friday, November 18 at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Chester. Visitation will be from 10 to 11:00 A.M., Memorial Service will be 11 to 12:00 P.M. followed by a light lunch. Roger requested before his death… this not be a sad occasion but a "Celebration of Life Well Lived." Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Westminster Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 10 W. Pleasant Grove Road, West Chester, PA 19380.
