The Life of Robert S. Ayerle M.D.

AYERLE, DR. ROBERT S., a loving father, husband and friend, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Thursday, November 6, 2014. He has willed his body to science and research at the Perelman Medical School of the University of Pennsylvania. Born December 19, 1920, in Philadelphia, Dr. Ayerle was the son of the late John and Clara (nee Schwab) Ayerle. He was predeceased in death by his wives, Sally Ann Almond Ayerle and Rosanna Simpson Ayerle and is survived by his children, Sally Ann Corbley (Paul) of Melbourne, FL, Margaret Christine Ayerle of Hatfield, PA, Robert (Christine) Ayerle of Lower Gwynedd, PA and Peter (Rosemary) Ayerle of Severna Park, MD; along with his grandchildren, PJ Corbley (Roya), Margaret Elizabeth Corbley, Meghan Corbley, Peter Corbley, Elizabeth Ayerle, Whitney Ayerle Bachrach (Thomas), Robert P. Ayerle, Kaitlyn Ayerle, Patrick Ayerle and great grandchildren Katharine Bachrach, Lillian Bachrach and Ryan Corbley. Bob enjoyed a long and fulfilled life. He began his education at St. Helena's Grammar School, and continued on to St. Joseph's Preparatory School. He attended Villanova University and received a chemical engineering degree with honors. He attended Princeton University as a Teaching Fellow and earned a Master's of Science in chemical engineering. After several years of employment as a research chemist with the Rohm & Haas Company, he left to pursue his true passion in medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. After medical school he joined the Army and completed his residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital in Washington, DC. After his honorable discharge from the military he began his career in industrial and occupational medicine with the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. His career continued when he became Medical Director of Pennsylvania Bell Telephone Company, where he administered their medical departments serving 60,000 Bell Employees. While at Bell he oversaw a number of clinical research projects including an early breast cancer screening study. Upon retiring from Bell, he became the International Medical Director for the Scott Paper Company. His career in occupational medicine included many great accomplishments. He was in the forefront and instituted one of the first corporate drug and alcohol treatment programs in the country, helping thousands of employees and individuals gain sobriety and productive lives. He served on the President's Council for Alcoholism and the President's Council for Physical Fitness. He served on multiple boards and committees relating to occupational health and safety. He was also in the forefront of the corporate wellness concept. Over his long career, he served his patients, employees, friends and family with love, caring and empathy. He will be missed by his family, friends, patients and all whose lives he touched. A Mass of celebration will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, December 13, 2014, at St. Norbert's Catholic Church, 50 Leopard Road, Paoli, PA 19301. Relatives and friends may call on Saturday December 13, 2014 from 930-10 A.M. at St. Norbert Church, 50 Leopard Rd. Paoli, PA. A Memorial Mass will begin at 10 A.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bob's honor to: The Poor Clare Sisters Monastery of St. Clare 70 Nelson Avenue Wappingers Falls, NY 12590-1121, Attn: Sister Mary Michael.
