The Life of Alfred A. Bishop Ph.D.

Alfred Abraham Bishop was born in Philadelphia on May 10, 1923 to Rose Kellam Bishop and Samuel Clifford Bishop. He attended Central High School for Boys in Philadelphia, where he met his life-long friend, Dr. Elmer J. Taylor, Jr. They became brothers for life. Central was where he developed his love for Chess and Stamp Collecting. He achieved all 8 Barnwell pins and was President of the International Chess Club. He graduated with honors in January of 1941. After graduation, Dr. Bishop joined the United States Army in May of 1943 and proudly served our country in World War II. He was responsible for stringing radar behind enemy lines and received an honorable discharge. He graduated from The University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering in 1950. He became a member of the Omega Psi Phi MU Fraternity of Philadelphia. In 1952 he worked for Fischer Porter, Specializing in fluid measurements. He later moved to Pittsburgh and married Maryann Francesca Brice in 1959. From that union Janet Lynn Bishop was born. He soon after attended The University of Pittsburgh, where he obtained his Master’s Degree in Chemical engineering in 1964. He worked as a professor in the Chemistry Department for the University from 1970 to 1985. He then earned his Doctoral Degree in Nuclear Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Bishop was also employed by Westinghouse in the Nuclear Energy Division, where he headed the team that designed cooling rods for nuclear reactors. He worked as a consultant on nuclear accidents. He retired from The University of Pittsburgh and moved back to Philadelphia in the mid 90’s. He was a very accomplished bridge player and was a senior life master in the National Bridge Association. He taught the game of Bridge to many individuals. He was a lifetime member of the NAACP and a member of the Association for the Study of African American Life & History in the Phila-Montco Branch. He loved classic and jazz music and was considered a mentor by many students in both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. He was a kind and loving person to many. Dr. Alfred A. Bishop was called home to be with our Lord, on the evening of October 9, 2016. Preceding him in death is a sister, Alice A. Bishop. Dr. Bishop is survived by his Daughter, Janet Lynn Bishop; Grandson, Giovanni Brice Bailo; Godson, Adeeb Ameen; (Brian E. Taylor) and Goddaughter, Burhedita Gonzalez, family, many friends, colleagues, and students. Visitation to begin at 10:30AM with a Funeral service at 11AM, on Thur., Oct. 27th, 2016 at West Laurel Hill Funeral Home, 225 Belmont Ave., Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004.
