The Life of Grace C. Oliver

OLIVER, Grace Fassitt 94, a retired buyer for the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, born in New Orleans, LA September 24, 1921 passed peacefully of natural causes September 15, 2016 at her home in Philadelphia, PA.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Emmett B. Oliver, Sr. in 2000. She was the last surviving offspring of the late George Carroll Fassitt (1892-1960) and the late Adele Nelson Fassitt (1895-1988) . She was a sister of the late John Fassitt (d. circa 1919), Joseph Fassitt (d.1945), Mary Fassitt Demery Murphy (d.1985), George Matthew Fassitt (d.2008), Alice Fassitt Jupiter (d.2012), and Yvonne Fassitt Thomas (d.2013). Her immediate survivors are her children Emmett B. Oliver, Jr. and Deborah Ann Oliver Marquez, and her grandson Calib O. Marquez.

A life long Catholic, she was devoted to the causes of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and was an enthusiastic supporter of Opera Ebony founded in 1973 by Wayne Sanders and Sister M. Elise Sisson, SBS (1897–1982).  Her love of Opera stemmed from the days, when after graduating from McDonogh No.35 High School, she attended Xavier University of New Orleans prior to moving to Philadelphia for her marriage to Emmett. She, and previously with her late sister Mary Fassitt Demery Murphy, actively participated in the Philadelphia Chapter of the Xavier University Alumni Association’s charitable outreach.

Grace,  a devoted wife and mother was an elegant, cultured and kind lady who was questioning and curious. She joined the Toast Mistress organization to hone her communication skills which she called upon to talk with and learn about people and their customs during her travels around the world. She was a dear and beloved aunt to her nieces and nephews and a friend to many including Martha Sutton of Philadelphia and her sole surviving first cousin Elaine La Croix Du Conge Of New Orleans.

A funeral service will be held Saturday September 24, 2016, 12 o’clock Noon at  the West Laurel Hill Funeral Home Chapel 225 Belmont Ave. Bala Cynwyd PA. Visitation precedes the service at 11 AM. Interment follows immediately at Cathedral Cemetery, 48th  Street and Lancaster Ave. Philadelphia PA.
