The Life of Christine Upshur

Christine Williams Upshur, 84, of Philadelphia, PA, passed away quietly on August 6, 2016 in Philadelphia, PA at Jefferson Hospital after a long battle with advanced Alzheimer’s disease. She was born on September 8, 1931 in Camilla, GA to J.L.B. and Arnedia Williams.  She received a bachelor’s degree in teaching from Albany State College in Georgia and a Master’s degree in education from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.  She married Bennie J. Shaw of Georgia and they moved to New York City where they had two daughters, Sabrina and Sonia Shaw.  Her marriage ended in divorce and she was remarried to Sumner Robert Upshur of Philadelphia, PA. She loved children and was employed as an elementary school teacher where she relished in providing them with a good foundation to become well-balanced individuals.  Before retiring, she was in the vanguard of teachers that integrated the faculty at the Adaire Public Elementary School in Philadelphia, PA where she taught first graders and after extreme community resistance, she eventually came to be loved and revered by her students and their parents. She was kind, caring and generous and always eager to help anyone in need.  She was a loyal member of Pinn Memorial Baptist Church in Philadelphia, PA, a town watch member and an avid pinochle player.  She is survived by her daughter, Sabrina Shaw, in Philadelphia, PA, a brother, Tommy Williams, sister-in-law Linda Williams in North Carolina, niece Willer Rean Ward in Florida and cousin Lula Mae Young in Delaware, and a host of relatives and friends.  She was predeceased by her husband, Sumner Robert Upshur of Philadelphia, PA, daughter, Sonia Shaw of Philadelphia, PA, brothers Earmon Williams of North Carolina and Harmon Williams of Florida and her sister, Josephine Williams of Florida. Visitation will begin at 10 A.M. on Thursday August 18, 2016, at West Laurel Hill Funeral Home, Inc., 225 Belmont Ave., Bala Cynwyd, PA, with Funeral Services at 11 A.M. and Interment to immediately follow at West Laurel Hill Cemetery.
