The Life of Ancel Callum

Ancel Callum was born September 29, 1943, in Clarendon Jamaica to Gwendolyn May and Lesley Callum. Ancel was the first born of 10 children, which consisted of three brothers and seven sisters. He attended Carmel Elementary School. While in his teens he moved to Spanish Town, where he resided until his early twenties. Shortly thereafter he moved to Kingston to expand his career; while residing with a family friend he learned to craft hats and bags and sold them at the local market. Ancel wasn’t content with selling crafted items, so he ventured off to work alongside his sister Aletha at a bar. It was during that time that he met his future wife and mother of his only child. A year into their union, his now wife Maudie Callum conceived their first and only biological child, Lorna. With the expansion of his family, Ancel was determined more than ever to solidify a career to support his new family. A few years later he was introduced to tailoring and worked as an intern making custom outfits for men. Ancel worked in that field for some years and developed a love for retail but was never completely satisfied with his career path. Ever ambitious, he left tailoring to make tiles in a textile factory.
His family expanded even further when he took in his two stepchildren Cynthia and Sherman Anderson. At this time, he went back into retail as a food distributor for Grace Kennedy Food Company, where he worked for over 30 years until he migrated to the United States to live with his daughter and grandson Julius. Throughout his almost seven years of living in America, Ancel never could sit still without working; it was what kept his spirit up, not to mention his independence.  Ancel maintained his ambitious drive and continued to work odd jobs from time to time even when he didn’t have to; his final job consisted of him working at the nearby corner store.
Ancel Callum was an ambitious man, who loved to work and was determined to master any challenge that was placed before him. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 45 years Maudie Callum; his daughter Lorna; stepchildren Cynthia and Sherman; grandson Julius; and great-grandson Jozi. He is also survived by seven siblings, nieces, nephews, friends and countless loved ones. Ancel Callum was called home by God on January 24th, 2016.
