The Life of Rudolph Norman

In Loving Memory of Rudolph Norman

His Life

Rudolph Norman affectionately called “Rudy” by his friends and “Norman” by his wife was the second of seven children born June 1, 1957 to Doris and Rudolph V. Norman.  His primary education was completed through the Philadelphia public school system.  He attended Drexel University majoring in mechanical engineering; which became his primary vocation at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard.  Rudy excelled greatly as a federal employee at Norfolk Ship Support Activity (NSSA), and was loved and respected by his colleagues where he successfully served for over 30 years.  In February 1983, Rudy was joined in holy matrimony to Lolita Smith; to this union they were blessed with two sons, Demetrius Aquil Norman and Ryan Martin.  Rudy was a caring and motivated father always involved with his community; he loved his work as a coach of basketball and football youth teams.

Rudy advised the youth to “think before acting” and as he grew older his wisdom transformed him into a scholar; a highly educated and diverse man; his interest included a love of Black History and the legacy of African Americans.  As a mentor to youth, Rudy was constantly sought out by others for advice on life issues.  Rudy would crack a smile and respond “it’s not that heavy” and “it’s all good”.  Rudy was a man of great integrity, honor, and self-respect and was loved and adored by friends, family and colleagues alike.  Rudy was a well diverse man; some of his other interest included hobbies such as creating his own wine, joining a blues association and traveling, not only for his job but for personal leisure as well.  Books and music were his constant companions and he challenged himself with various schools of thought and cultures.  This attributed to a broad outlook of life and a deep spiritual understanding.  In addition, Rudy inspired everyone he encountered with words of wisdom.  We often heard that’s “phenomenal”!

Rudolph leaves behind to cherish his memory his devoted wife Lolita, two children: Demetrius (Marilyn) and Ryan (Kia), three grandchildren: Saniyah, Ryan Jr., and Justin.  Sisters: Julia, Fatima, Sheila, Ruth, Britney, and brother: Aquil.  Father Rudolph and stepmother Brenda, aunts: Ann Christopher, Beatrice Norman, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
