The Life of Edwin A. Garrett III
BAR HARBOR - The Reverend Edwin Atlee Garrett III, 91, died July 2, 2015 in Bar Harbor, Maine. He was born October 19, 1923, in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, the son of Edwin Atlee Garrett, Jr. and Ethel P. (Bennett) Garrett. He was a graduate of Harvard College, class of 1946, and the Philadelphia Divinity School earning the degrees of both Bachelors of Theology (MDiv) and Masters of Sacred Theology. He served in the 26th "Yankee" Division of the U.S. Army in World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star, as well as the Army Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge.
He was ordained Deacon by the Rt. Rev. J. Gillespie Armstrong, July 1, 1950 and Priest by the Rt. Rev. William P. Remington January 6, 1951. He was Seminarian in Charge of St. Andrew's West Manayunk; Vicar of St. Martin's, Oak Lane, Philadelphia; and then Vicar of St. Andrew's Lewisburg and Christ Church Milton as well as Episcopal Chaplain at Bucknell University. Then he was Missioner of the Diocese of Pennsylvania; Vicar and first Rector of St. Francis in the Fields, Sugartown (which was on land granted by William Penn to his ancestor William Garrett); a member of the Cathedral Chapter of the Diocese of Pennsylvania; most recently he was Honorary Associate at St. Saviour's, Bar Harbor; and a member of the Diocesan Council of the Diocese of Maine.
A past Governor of the Society of Colonial Wars in the State of Maine and Deputy Governor General of the Society from Maine. He had also been Chaplain of the Society of Colonial Wars in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and was the descendant of ten members of the (Colonial) Pennsylvania Assembly. A member of the Welcome Society of Pennsylvania, he was the descendant of seven Pennsylvania, 1681-1682 Twenty-three Ships families.
He served as President of the Bar Harbor Historical Society for two and a half decades. He was the author of several articles in historical journals, as well as a history of the windows and monuments of St. Saviour's Episcopal Church, Bar Harbor. He also served as a member of the Bar Harbor Town Council.
He was predeceased by his wife of sixty years, Margaret W. Garrett; and is survived by a son, Edwin A. Garrett IV, of Bar Harbor, ME; daughters Sarah Berube and husband Gregory of Nashua, New Hampshire; and Hannah Bannon and husband Roger of Fortson, Georgia, as well as three grandchildren Lauren Bannon, Nathaniel Bannon, and Rebecca Berube.
A Requiem Eucharist will be held at Two o'clock in the afternoon Saturday July 11 at St. Saviour's Episcopal Church, 41 Mount Desert Street, Bar Harbor, Maine.
A private burial will follow at the family's convenience.
