The Life of Wendell A. Waters

On Wednesday, September 23, 2015, God called Wendell A. Waters, age 90, home. He was the son of the late Harold Waters and Lucy Mae Skipworth and was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 25, 1924. Wendell was educated in the Philadelphia School System, which included Shoemaker Junior High School and Central High School. He attended Penn State University in 1942. However, in 1944, Wendell enlisted in the Army and was deployed to Italy to fight in World War ll. He served in the Army's 92nd Infantry Division as a medic and received the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two bronze stars, and World War II Victory Medal and was honorably discharged in 1946. After the war, he returned to Penn State University. In 1948, he received his Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry from Penn State University. After graduation, he attended New York University in New York, New York. In 1948, Wendell joined the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Mu Chapter, at Penn State University. Wendell was baptized as a young boy at Mt. Pisgah AME Church in the 1930's under the pastorate of the late Isaac N. Patterson Jr. He remained a faithful member until health issues prevented him from attending church. As an active member, he was a member of the church's Heart and Hands Club. Later on, Wendell worked as a chemist for the Defense Personnel Supply Center (Quartermaster) in South Philadelphia for thirty-three years. As a chemist, he was responsible for testing the durability and safety of military uniforms. In 1956, Wendell was united in holy matrimony to Agnes L. Waters. They were married for thirty-six years until her death in 1992. This union produced three children, Angela, Wendell, and June. No matter how difficult his trek, he never complained. He always smiled and said, "I'm doing just fine." His job is done and now it is time for him to rest. Wendell was an avid music lover who enjoyed playing the piano and listening to jazz. He also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, watching cowboy shows, and devouring cookies, cakes, and Munchos. His favorite phrase was "Venire qui" which means "Come here" in Italian. Wendell leaves to rejoice in his memory: his three loving children, Angela Leonard, Wendell Waters Jr., and June Bey; seven grandchildren, Phillip Waters, Ariel Bey, Nia Leonard, Adrien Leonard, Xavier Bey II, Justin Leonard, and Imani Bey; one daughter-in-law, Diane Waters; and two sons-in-law, Warren Leonard and Xavier Bey; and a host of other relatives and friends. His Funeral Service will be 11am at Mt. Pisgah AME Church, 428 N. 41st St., Philadelphia, PA 19104; viewing, 8:30-10:30am. There will be an Omega Service from 10:30 to 11:00am. Burial, West Laurel Hill Cemetery, 215 Belmont Avenue, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004.
