The Life of George W. Famiglietti

George William, age 93 of Havertown, Pa. died peacefully at Broomall Presbyterian Village on September 16, 2014 with his daughters at his side. Son of the late Amelia and Frank Famiglietti, he graduated from Upper Darby High School in 1939 where he lettered in football and baseball and was voted peppiest in his class. He then attended Villanova University earning a BS in Economics and lettered in the 150 lb football program. During his senior year he was called into active duty by the US Marine Corp. for World War II. He returned to college in 1946 to complete his education and graduate. He was recalled to active duty in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. George remained in the Marine Corp until 1964, serving 25 years and retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. It was always his goal to be the last living World War II veteran. Over the years he remained active with the Marine Corp League and the Reserve Officers Association.
George worked as a Certified Public Accountant for the School Board of Philadelphia and as Comptroller of The Camera Shop Inc. He worked private accounts in his later years, still doing income taxes into his nineties. He was active in the local community serving as president and treasure of the PTA, coaching little league, serving as director of the local YMCA and as director and treasurer of the local swim club. He was a member of several professional accounting associations. He loved playing golf with his friends and was a charter member of Edgemont Golf Club.
George was predeceased by his wife Betty Jean (nee Morris), and is survived by his daughters Carolyn Mayer, Susan (John) Curry and son Harry G. Familetti, grandchildren George Mayer, Josh (Allison) Curry and Blair Curry, great-grandchildren Brady and Madison Curry. Funeral arrangements were private.
