The Life of Burton Cooperberg

Early in the morning on July 15, 2015, Burton “Buddy” Cooperberg passed away at Queens’s Elmhurst Hospital Center of natural causes. He was 88 years old.

Buddy was born in Brooklyn, New York, on December 29, 1926. He was the second child of Morris Cooperberg and Lily Rothschild. He attended City College of New York, and proudly served in the U.S. Navy as an electrician during the Korean War and was stationed in The Great Lakes.

On December 16, 1951 he was married to Davida Simone Horn in Brooklyn, New York. In 1977, after 26 years of marriage, they relocated from Long Island, New York, to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Buddy enjoyed a long career as a businessman with various enterprises. He was a clothing contractor, a restaurateur, a real estate owner and investor. He shared many of his business pursuits with his longtime partner, the late Agostine “Augie” Malerba.

He was an avid racer of vintage cars, and participated in races until he was 80 years old. During his time in the Navy, he enjoyed engaging in boxing matches, and was well-respected by his peers. Throughout his life, he had wide-ranging interests, from archery and photography to collecting pens, timepieces and antique automobiles. He loved traveling, especially to London, and treasured spending time with his family and close friends.

He is survived by his wife, Davida Simone Cooperberg, his two children, Charles Ian Cooperberg and Amy Sue DiLuca, his daughter-in-law Maricela Cooperberg, his son-in-law Anthony “Tony” Michael DiLuca, and his three grandchildren, Anna Lilia Cooperberg, Michael Anthony DiLuca, and Antonia Lily DiLuca. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Gloria Armore.

Funeral services for Buddy Cooperberg will be held at 11:00AM on Sunday, June 19, at the Bringhurst Funeral Home at West Laurel Hill Cemetery in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. Rabbi Julie Greenberg will officiate.
