The Life of Gwendolyn White

Celebrating the Life
Of
Gwendolyn Victoria White

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13

Gwendolyn V. White was born on February 21, 1934, in Orange, Virginia. She was the ninth of twelve children born to the late Katie Johnson White and Henry White. Gwen, as she was affectionately called, transitioned from Earth to Glory quietly in her sleep on Saturday, June 27, 2015. What a new room, just for me!! What a great family reunion!!

Gwen was baptized at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Orange, Virginia; when she moved to the Philadelphia area, she joined Mount Calvary Baptist Church. As a member of Mount Calvary, she served on the Board of Trustees, the Board of Ushers, and attended Sunday school and Bible Study regularly. She also received Woman of the Year Award in 2004 and was recognized for 28 years of service as an Usher in 2014.

Gwen graduated from George Washington Carver Regional High School, Rapidan, Virginia. She continued her education becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse, and worked as a Private Duty Nurse for many years. After growing weary of dealing with so much sickness, she returned to school on a part-time basis. Proving it is never too late to learn, she graduated with honors earning an Associate Degree in Allied Health Science from Philadelphia Community College. With degree in hand, she was employed by various health care facilities in varying roles, retiring from Thomas Jefferson Health Care System.

Gwen was a devoted and proud mother of her son, Douglas. She was one of his biggest supporters from the time he and his friends had band practices in her basement, to his current achievement as an entrepreneur establishing two successful businesses. She was also overly devoted to her grand children and great grand children, equally devoted to her siblings, stepping up when needed and taking the lead on more than one occasion.

Gwen’s sense of family was of utmost importance to her. She had the unique ability to make her friends and family feel special. She was smart, kind, generous, straight-forward, and known for giving advice to her biological and church family members - wanted or not.

Gwen was predeceased by her parents, and sisters Henrietta Johnson, Julia Dixon, Josephine Hall, Eloise Jordan, Francine Anderson, and Rosa Lee White; her brothers Robert, Warren and Earl White. She leaves a legacy of love and to cherish her memory one son, Douglas White, Sr. (Celeste); two grand children, Douglas White, Jr. and Erin White; four great grand children: Zamir Thomas-White, Dyhiem White, Jakai White and E’Myah White; one brother Elwood White (Florence) of Louisa, Virginia, and one sister Louise White of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a host of loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and extraordinary friends. We say to our Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, and Friend, “Bye for just now. See you in the morning or for sure at supper time!”

Lovingly submitted,
The Family
