The Life of Marion Louise Duncan Scott

SCOTT, Marion Louise Duncan was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on October 20, 1930 to Leslie I. Duncan and Marion Odell Duncan. She was the younger of two daughters. She was called from this life on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2015, and passed peacefully in her home in Philadelphia, PA, surrounded by her family.
Marion graduated from Weaver High School in Hartford, CT in 1948. She was a member of the National Honor Society; was a Cheerleader and loved sports. Immediately thereafter, she enrolled in Connecticut State Teacher’s College where she completed 1 year.
Marion and was united in marriage to Harry E. Scott, Jr. in 1951 and shortly thereafter they relocated from Washington DC to Philadelphia PA. Six children were born of this union: Bunnie, Rae, Laurie. Skipper, Jeffrey and Brian. Marion soon found herself the sole supporter of her six children and made caring and providing for her children the #1 priority in her life.
Her employment history includes the Free Library of Philadelphia (librarian); over 15 years of service at the U.S. Postal Service where she held several positions; and Community Legal Services (receptionist).  She retired from Scheie Eye Institute (receptionist) in 1995.
Anyone who knew her said she was a “great lady”.  She was an incredible mother: strong , proud and she had every reason to be proud of the job she did raising her six children. She was always a sharp dresser and was admired by many for her sense of style and great looks. She had great taste and couldn’t resist a good deal. Mom loved shopping: QVC, TJ Maxx, and Home Goods were her favorites. Good sweets, especially fudge, would always put a big smile on her face. But beyond any of that, she loved her kids and put everything she had into making sure they had the opportunities for a better life.
She was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by her family: Marion Whitney, Rae Scott-Jones (Ernest), Toni Laurie, Harry Leslie (AnnaLee), Jeffrey Wesley (Xenia), and Brian Shelton (Emily); 11 grandchildren: Desmond Whitney, Danielle Giles (Jose), Natasha Scott-Richardson (Anthony), Justin, Randall, Katya, Lena, Courtney, Taylor, Jamal Jones and Kahlil Jones; 2 great grandchildren: Piers Giles and Ansley Richardson, and her sister Lorraine Davis.

Ms. Scott's influence on me and my brothers was tremendous. Her straightforwardness, generosity, and internal strength helped in molding us into the people we are today. She didn’t have a lot of money but she had an abundance of style and grace. A couple of years ago, I ran into Skip on a visit to Philly. I asked about his Mom and we went to visit her. It was good to see her again. She still called it like she saw it, still full of wisdom and optimism. I’m sorry I didn’t visit her more often. That’s my loss, I will miss her. My condolences go out to the family. You are in my prayers.
