The Life of Dr. Frederick H. Bartlett Jr.

Dr. Frederick H. Bartlett Jr., a resident of Rydal Park for 6 and a half years, died Monday, May 11, 2015, in the Joseph C. Scott Medical Center in the Rydal Park complex. He was 90. He practiced obstetrics and gynecology at Abington Memorial Hospital for 41 years. He graduated from Westtown Friends School in 1942, and entered Haverford College in an accelerated Navy Program, graduating in 1944. Until he entered medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, he served as a U.S. Navy corpsman. He graduated from medical school in 1948, and interned at Abington Hospital for two years. In 1950, he was called back to the Navy during the Korean War and served in Hokkaido (North Japan) at an Army hospital (they were short of Army doctors and borrowed Navy personnel). After six months in Hokkaido, he returned to the Navy, serving as ship's doctor on the S.S. Patrick (a troop ship based in Seattle and going back and forth to Sapporo, Japan, carrying troops to Korea.)
He married Elizabeth Young in June 1952, and studied pathology at Abington Hospital (after leaving the Navy) until the Ob-Gyn residency of three years opened up. He started practice in 1956 with offices in Abington and Hatboro. He recertified his board certification three times. He was proud of being a physician and devoted to his patients. Dr. Bartlett was a member of the Huntingdon Valley Country Club and Abington Friends Meeting. He enjoyed sailing, golf, travel, and history. He was a "Civil War buff" - his great-great-grandfather was a captain in the Union Army. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Bartlett; three children, Libby Weihenmayer (Bill), Dr. "Rick" Bartlett (Melanie), and Susan Trigg (Billy); seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral and Interment will be held privately at his request. Memorial contributions may be made to Abington Memorial Hospital, c/o Ob-Gyn Clinic, 1200 Old York Rd., Abington, PA 19001.

Dr.Bartlett probably saved my life. He suggested a mammogram. He did not find anything after an exam that was cancer but wanted "all his girls to have a mammogram" That showed a small lesion. So in 1975, they operated and found carcinoma so removed the breast. I am now 85. I think of him so often when breast cancer is mentioned. He was a special person as a Doctor but also a warm caring friend. I am so thankful to have had him as my Doctor and friend.
