The Life of Nancy Ware Scheie

SCHEIE, NANCY WARE, died on April 8, 2015, from complications related to breast cancer at the Hackettstown Memorial Hospital in Hackettstown, NJ. Daughter of the late Harold G. Scheie M.D. (longtime Chair of the Dept. of Ophthalmology at the University of Penn., founder of the Scheie Eye Institute) and his wife Mary Ann Tallman Scheie Tryon (noted Phila. volunteer). Born on Oct. 5, 1955, she grew up in Ardmore, attended The Shipley School, graduated in the Class of 1973, and attended Stanford Univ. She worked for the Scheie Eye Institute and at several local businesses, but eventually became disabled for the rest of her life. Notwithstanding her disability, Nancy brought joy to the many people who knew her. An early user of the Internet when it was in its infancy, Nancy was also an avid collector with a knack for finding and curating unusual items. She is survived by her brother, Eric G. Scheie, of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Nancy's eyes were donated for corneal transplantation (a procedure pioneered by her father). A Memorial Service will be held at the BRINGHURST FUNERAL HOME at West Laurel Hill Cem. on Saturday May 9, at 10:30 A.M. Int. will be at Arlington National Cem. in her father's grave at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Scheie Eye Institute, 51 N. 39th St, Phila., PA 19104.
