The Life of William A. Winneberger Sr.

William Winneberger, Sr. William A. Winneberger, Sr. (Bill) 89, of Ocean City, NJ, formerly of Cheltenham, PA passed away peacefully at The Shores at Wesley Manor on February 10, 2015. Bill was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA and graduated from Germantown High School. He was honorably discharged from the United States US Army Air Corps and attended Temple University and University of Pennsylvania where he received a Masters in Education. While at Temple he was Captain of the Men’s Gymnastics Team which went on to win the NCAA National Championship in 1949. This was the first time any team at Temple had won a National Championship. They were honored by being inducted into the Temple Hall of Fame in 2008. He placed 3rd in Nationals on the flying rings in 1948. Bill was a dedicated and respected teacher and coach for over 30 years. He taught in the Upper Darby School District for 8 years and for 24 years in the Springfield, Montgomery County, PA School District. He was certified and taught courses in Math, Science, Wood Shop, Metal Shop and Drafting. He also worked as a Physical Therapist for a total of 31 years between his private practice as well as with the Visiting Nurse Society, at Germantown Hospital and Moss Rehab in Philadelphia. Bill coached gymnastics and swimming and was the school district Aquatics Director at Springfield High School. He retired to Margate, NJ in 1986 and moved to Ocean City, NJ in 1990 where he enjoyed fishing, boating, golf, biking, woodworking, baking and spending time with his many grandchildren. Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years Nancy (nee McCracken). Loving father of William Jr. (Deborah), Scott (Lisa), Gail (Scott Ping) and Tedd (Rebecca). Dear brother of Lois (Daniel Reardon) and George (dec.). Adoring grandfather of Scott, Andrew, Tiffanie, Melissa, Lindsay, Kristen, Ryan, Jennifer, Stephen, Kristal, Lacey, Sarah, Erin, and Logan as well as 6 great-grandchildren. Further survived by nieces and nephews. His funeral service will be offered Tuesday February 17 in the morning at 11 o’clock from The Godfrey Funeral Home of Palermo, 644 South Shore Road, Palermo, NJ where friends may call from 10 o’clock until time of service. Burial will follow at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, PA. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011 in honor of his wife Nancy.
