The Life of Joan Markman

Markman, Joan L., of Philadelphia, PA, died on Wednesday January 14, 2015. Born in Baltimore and grew up in Pikesville, MD, Joan graduated Wesleyan University in 1979 and University of Virginia School of Law in 1983. She was Assistant U.S. Attorney (1987-2007) and then Philadelphia’s first Chief Integrity Officer (2008-2014). She is preceded in death by her parents and survived by her husband James M. Becker; children Andrew Markman Becker and Elizabeth Markman Becker; brother and sister in-law, Scott and Sharon Markman; sister in-law and brother in-law, MaryAnn Blocher and Tom Blocher; nephews and nieces Leland and Alexa Markman and Krysta Blocher; and many beloved family members and friends. Interment is private. Memorial service is Sunday, January 18th at 3 p.m. at Society Hill Synagogue, 418 Spruce Street in Philadelphia. Shiva will be observed at the Synagogue following the service and then at the late residence, Monday and Tuesday at 7 p.m. Shiva will also be observed on Tuesday in Chicago, at Scott and Sharon Markman’s home from 7-9:00 p.m. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Breakthrough Bike Challenge http://www.breakthrough.myevent.com, or American Jewish World Service http://ajws.org Arrangements by Bringhurst Funeral Home at West Laurel Hill Cemetery.
