The Life of Deborah Allen

Deborah Ann Allen was born November 6, 1951 in Philadelphia PA. She was the first of three children born to Patricia and Leon Allen Jr.  Deborah (affectionately known as Debbie by family and friends) received her early education from the Philadelphia Public School System, and graduated from Simon Gratz High School  in 1969. Debbie attended and graduated from Cheyney University with a BA in Secondary Education Mathematics in 1976. Determined to give back to her community, she became a Secondary Education Mathematics Teacher for the Philadelphia Public School System until she retired in June 2012. For more than 30 years, Debbie not only taught mathematics, but she encouraged and sowed seeds of character, self-worth, and hope into the lives of her students. Her students loved their “Ms. Allen”. They looked up to her, they were protective of her, and they strived to live up to her aspirations for them.

Debbie accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior in her teenage years and was baptized by Reverend Willie Cook at Enon Baptist Church, 19th and Green Street. In 1969 Debbie and Tony Lewis became the proud parents of Tracy Allen. In 1995 Debbie joined Greater Exodus Baptist Church, Reverend Dr. Herbert Lusk II, where she helped with the afterschool program alongside her mother, Patricia Allen. Debbie became a devoted member of the Greater Exodus Quilt Ministry and the Mt. Airy Garage Quilt Club. She graciously donated her special hand-made crafts to the New Covenant Church Comfort Ministry. She enjoyed fashions, detailed arts and crafts, sewing, and quilting. She had an unbelievable talent for tastefully blending colors and prints to produce beautiful art.

Debbie was known for her endless kindness, her ability to make people laugh, her amazing spirit of forgiveness, and her strength to say “Thank you God” in the midst of crisis and storms. On October 31, 2014 at 12:30pm, she departed this life to be absent from the body, but present with the Lord forever. She leaves a legacy of love to her daughters: Tracy and Whitney; her beloved great grandchildren: Ian and Izirah; father, Leon; brother, Leon III; sister, Sandra Lynne; one niece, Michelle; 4 nephews: Michael, Tyree, Terell, and Adrian; loving cousins, and many special friends.
