The Life of Darryl L. Smith

Darryl Lansing Smith was born on January 31, 1947 in Philadelphia, Pa to the late Alfreda L. Smith and the late Lushington D. Theorgood Sr.

Darryl was the second born of five children from Lushington Theorgood.  Darryl was preceded in death by his brothers Bruce, Lushington Jr. (Davey), and his sister Cheryl Linde Brown.

Darryl was educated in the Philadelphia Public School System.  After graduating from Overbrook High School he was drafted into the United States Army and served from 1966-1968.  From there he went on to work for the State of Pa at the Liquor Control Board and his final job was with the Social Security Administration where he was employed for 32 years.

In 1972 Darryl married Debbie Mabrey and from this union one son was born Khary Malik Smith.  Later in life he met and married the love of his life Brita Hudson.  Darryl shared a wonderful and adventurous journey with Brita until her passing on July 2, 2011.  They had a blessed union and shared a great life with her children Michelle and Michael Hudson.  He was a proud father and was especially elated to expand his family with a daughter and son.

From a young boy Darryl had a tremendous sense of humor.  He would laugh a lot with everyone and could laugh about himself too.  Darryl was a DEEP lover of  “Real Jazz”. He lived for spending time with his Jazz buddies going to concerts, exploring new jazz venues and seminars.  He was deeply rooted into preserving the legacy of jazz music and had a passion for sports and African-American culture and collecting books.  He was very fond of sharing this knowledge with those around him particularly his children and grandchildren.

Darryl enjoyed debating and a good conversation.  What mattered to him most was caring for his family and friends. He had lasting and longtime friendships and he selected them carefully.  He often remarked that he looked for character and humanitarianism in his friends. He would often share stories about his job and how much he enjoyed his co-workers.

Darryl was actively involved in community and civic associations and believed in active engagement and supporting those around him.

He leaves to cherish his memory his children Khary Smith, Michael Hudson and Michelle J. Hudson. Grandchildren Brianah and Zackery. Sister Paulette Cunningham (Charles Cunningham). Sister-in- laws, Gertrude Smith, Opal Elliott (Bervin Elliott) and Carmen Martin (Anthony Martin).  A host of nieces and nephews and friend Regina Antrom.
