The Life of Warren Hughes Keator

Warren Hughes Keator, of Largo, Florida (formerly Gwynedd Valley, Pennsylvania), passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 7, 2014, at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Florida with family by his side. He was 86.  Warren was born in the Germantown section of Philadelphia to the late John Frisbee Keator, Jr. and Jean Hughes Keator. His beloved wife Marjorie Ann Mattson preceded him in death in 2007. Warren graduated high school from The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania in 1945. He then attended Yale University and University of San Francisco with a Bachelor of Sciences degree. He proudly served in the Army National Guard as well as the United States Army in the 82nd Airborne Division, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant and an honorable discharge in 1954. He was a professional Land Surveyor by trade, registered in PA, NJ and MD, having worked with Sanders & Thomas Consulting Engineers of Pottstown, Pennsylvania. He also owned his own land surveying company for many years in suburban Philadelphia. Among Mr. Keator’s accomplishments is having surveyed one of the first US malls in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia portion of the I-95 expressway, Limerick nuclear power plant cooling towers and various bridge and highway projects abroad in both Africa and Puerto Rico. An entrepreneur at heart, Warren was a successful stock and real estate investor as well as a tavern/restaurant owner.  Among his favorite things were analyzing data and numbers, doing crossword puzzles, and, most important to him, planning family reunions where he could connect family cousins to one another because, as he liked to say, “There’s nothing more important than children and family knowing one another.” Warren is survived by his five children, Janet K. Brooks (husband Craig), Ronnie W. Coleman (Sally), Lisa Lister (Jim), Cheryl K. Nelson (Erik) and Robert Mattson Keator (Deanna), 13 grandchildren: Amanda, Jennie, Allison, John, Jason, Kelly, Michael, Katie, Natalie, Monica, Alex, Mattson and Maya, and seven great-grandchildren: Ella, Kyleigh, Halle, Olivia, Jett, Jack and Bryn.  Warren met the love of his life, Marjorie Ann in Contra Costa, California and was instantly smitten. Warren and “Margie” (as he referred to his love) married in 1961. They then moved the family to Fort Washington, Pennsylvania where they enjoyed raising the kids and vacationing at a cabin that Warren designed and built himself on Lake Whitney in the Pennsylvania Pocono Mountains. The family spent summers swimming and winters ice fishing & hunting at the cabin home.  In the mid-eighties, Mr. and Mrs. Keator retired to the beach, spending summers in Ocean City, New Jersey and enjoying full-time residency in Indian Rocks Beach, Florida, located just outside of Clearwater. The couple chose this location because it was home of Philadelphia Phillies Spring training where he and Margie spent many seasons enjoying ball games.  Warren and Margie’s favorite times included those summers in Ocean City when the kids, grandchildren and all the “cousins” visited and grew to know one another. Many Independence Days the family would march in the 59th street parade, salute the flag and sing the Star Spangled Banner in honor of our great nation’s independence. And, the Keators took personal pride in gathering the ever-expanding family together from around the country every three to five years for family reunions either in New Jersey or Florida.  As the Keator family grew to four generations, Warren was pleased to be called G-G-pa, Pop Pop, Grand Pa and Grand Pop. Warren’s funeral will be held Saturday, September 20th, 2014 at 11am at West Laurel Hill Cemetery Chapel located at 215 Belmont Avenue in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. Burial will immediately follow at the Keator family plot at West Laurel Hill where Warren and Margie’s ashes will be combined and buried together, representing their eternal love for one another. In lieu of flowers and in memory of his beloved Margie who died of Pancreatic Cancer, remembrances in Warren’s name can be made to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org/donate.
