The Life of John Crocker Townsend

John Crocker Townsend, 92, died Aug. 2, 2011, at VNA Hospice House. He was born in Philadelphia and lived in Vero Beach for 20 years, coming from his birthplace. He worked for the Burroughs Corp., the Korman Corp. and was general manager of Society Hill Towers in Philadelphia. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific as commander of a submarine chaser. He attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the varsity basketball team. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Serfling Townsend of Vero Beach; sons, Charles Howland Townsend of Rowayton, Conn., and William Howland Townsend of Atlanta; daughter, Susan Locke Townsend of Bluffton, S.C.; sister, Elizabeth Serre Townsend of Wilmington, Del.; four granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann Howland Townsend; and sister, Marguerite Townsend Kelsey. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 2365 Pine Ave., Vero Beach, FL 32960. Services: A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Aug. 13 at Trinity Episcopal Church, Vero Beach. Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach.
