The Life of John Meldrum
JOHN HULBURT, 90, died peacefully at home in Radnor, PA, on May 22, 2014. Jack left behind his beloved and loving family: his wife, Jane MacKnight Meldrum; his son John (Theresa), of Shreveport, Louisiana; his daughter
Elizabeth Earp (Thomas), of Haddonfield, New Jersey; his grandchildren
Jennifer Varnadore (Rodney), Katharine Knicely (Joshua), Diana Hunter
(Orie), Paul Guelich (Maria), and Katharine Odille; nine
great-grandchildren; his stepchildren, James Dawson, Thomas Dawson
(Jerre), Ellen Ferrise (Joseph), and Alice Dawson, their children, and
their grandchildren; and numerous other relatives, all very important to
Jack. Jack was predeceased in 1995 by his late wife, Margaret "Miget"
Valiant Meldrum. Jack entered the world in Buffalo, NY. The
depression resulted in the family's moving to Englewood, NJ. There Jack
helped support his family by selling the Saturday Evening Post, and
there he developed a love of sports and choral music that continued
throughout his life. Jack was a member of the "Hawks" basketball team
and sang in boys' choirs. At age 19, Jack joined the Army to serve in World War II.
He was part of an infantry unit that would have invaded Japan if the
war had not ended when it did. After the war, Jack renewed a pre-war
acquaint-ance with Miget Valiant. They were married in 1946. The family
moved to Cherry Hill, New Jersey, in 1957. Jack moved to Radnor after
Miget's death and his marriage to Jane (whose brother was a Hawk). Jack joined The New England insurance group in 1952 and spent his career working with clients in financial planning. Tennis
became Jack's sport. He played at the Cynwyd Club and at the Cape May
Tennis Club. At Cynwyd he was the mixed doubles champion on several
occasions. Church membership was important to Jack. His early mentors
were connected with churches in Englewood. In Cherry Hill he was a
member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder and a choir
member. At Wayne Presbyterian Church he was a member of the Oratorio
Choir. A memorial service will be held at 10 A.M. on Monday, June
9th, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Cherry Hill, New Jersey. In lieu of
flowers, Jack's family asks that memorial contribu-tions be made to
Trinity Presbyterian Church, Cherry Hill, New Jersey, or Wayne
Presbyterian Church, Wayne, Pennsylvania, or any division of the
Salvation Army.
