The Life of Dr. William Doan

The Honorable, Dr. William Doan was born April 2, 1792 in Cumberland County, Maine and died June 22, 1847. He was a US Congressman and elected as a Democrat to respresent Ohio's 5th District in the Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh Congresses. He served from 1839 to 1843. In 1812 he moved with his parents from Maine to Clermont County, Ohio and initially studied medicine in New Richmond. He settled in WIthamsville as a general practictioner in 1818, and graduated from the Ohio Medical College in Cincinnati in 1827. Prior to his election to Congress, Doan was a member of the State House of Representatives (1831 to 1832) and the State Senate (1833 to 1834). He was not a candidate for renomination to the US House in 1842, and after completing his second term he returned to his medical practice in Withamsville.
