The Life of Charles Scott

Scott, Charles “Charley” R. Scott, 99 of Haverford, PA passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at his home at the Quadrangle in Haverford.  Born in Philadelphia, he was the only son of the late Charles A. and Mary McCord Scott.  Charley served in the US Navy during WW II and had tours of duty in both the North Atlantic on a Destroyer Escort and in the Pacific serving on an LST. He was a 1936 graduate of Penn Wharton, where he captained the 1935 Soccer team, attaining All-American status.  He returned to the University of Pennsylvania in 1939 to become the Freshman Soccer Coach and became the Head Coach in 1943.  In 1941, Charley became one of the ten founding members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, an Association that has grown to over 30,000 members.  He served as President in 1956 and received their Honor Award in 1966.  In 1993, he was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.  In his 23 years of being head coach, he compiled a record of 141 wins, with 22 winning seasons.  His teams won or shared seven Ivy League titles.  He had the privilege of coaching 21 players who also became All-Americans.  Over his coaching years, he served as the Chairman of the NCAA Soccer Rules Committee and served on the US Olympic Soccer Committee for 18 years.  In 1948 and 1956 he helped train the US Olympic team and in 1953 he went to Germany for the US Armed Forces to do clinics and set up base intramural programs.

While at Penn, he earned his Master in Education (1942) and taught Physical Education.  He became the Asst. Athletic Director in 1953 and helped form Philadelphia Big 5 Basketball - and was inducted into the Big 5 Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Penn Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996.  He also was named Acting Athletic Director three times.  In 1981, Charley received the Alumni Award of Merit from the University.  After being “on campus” for almost 50 years, he retired in 1981.  After his retirement from Penn, Charley became an avid tennis player, playing well into his 90’s.

Charley loved the Lord Jesus and served as the Superintendent of Sunday School at Bala-Cynwyd Methodist for 25 years.  He was a faithful member there for over 60 years, before joining Proclamation Church a few years ago.

He was preceded in death by his wife Dora Linton Scott and his grandson Charles R Scott, III.  He is survived by his children Jeanne Condos and husband Dr. Dick Condos, Bonnie Gleeson and husband Chris, Charles R. “Bob" Scott and wife Marcy.  He also leaves behind ten grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 14, 2014 at Proclamation Presbyterian Church, 278 S. Bryn Mawr Ave, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010  (610) 520-9500.  A reception will follow the service at the church.
