Enon M. Harris - former Army Officer Guarded Lincoln's Body at Independence Hall.
Enon M. Harris, a first lieutenant in the United States Army during the Civil War and of the 27 naval and military officers who guarded the bier of Abraham Lincoln while his body lay in state in Independence Hall, died on Saturday after an illness of seven weeks.
He was buried yesterday. The funeral services were held at his home on Moore St. in Darby, PA. He was 70 yrs old.
Lieutenant Harris was one of the last three survivors of the famous guard. The two survivors remaining are Colonel Samuel Bell, United States Commissioner, of this city and General James Forney, of the United States Marine Corps.
Lieutenant Harris was a former member of the Darby Board of Health, a Justice of the Peace at Collingdale and a member of the Third Ward election board of Darby.
He was the father of County Surveyor Enon M. Harris Jr.
For two days he stood guard over the coffin of Lincoln, acting as an escort to the funeral cortege on the way to and from the railroad station. At that time he was first lieutenant of the Eighth United States Heavy Artillery.
