The Life of Josiah S. Smith

Private Josiah Smith of Sampson County, was wounded in the neck and captured at Gettysburg in July, 1863. He was hospitalized at Gettysburg until transferred to David's Island, New York Harbor on July 17. He was paroled to Virginia on September 8, 1863. After returning to duty he was wounded in the leg and jaw and was captured at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, on May 12, 1864. Josiah died in a Washington, DC hospital on June 11.
