James Dinwiddie Kilgore was born July 31, 1902, at Peace Institute in Raleigh, North Carolina. His grandfather, James Dinwiddie was President and owner of Peace Institute, a school for girls. "Jim" used to laugh that he was the only legitimate baby ever born at Peace! He attended North Carolina State University and was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in architecture. He was a Deacon at White Memorial Presbyterian Church. He became President of Pine State Creamery in Raleigh after the death of his father, Dr. Benjamin Wesley Kilgore in 1943. Pine State Creamery was founded by Dr. Kilgore in 1919. "Mr. Jim" was President of the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, a Trustee of Peace College, a Trustee of the Consolidated Presbyterian College, a director of Progressive Farmer, President of the North Carolina Dairy Products Association, President of the Raleigh Kiwanis Club and a member of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. He received the Wautauga Medal from North Carolina State University. The Wautauga Medal is the highest non-academic award given by the University. In 1991 he was inducted into the North Carolina Agricultural Hall of Fame. His father was also inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1967.

He died March 19, 1989 in Raleigh, North Carolina and is buried in the Kilgore Family plot at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh. ll
