The Life of ELIZABETH PRINCE NUFER DIXON

Backstroke specialist in 1930s and 1940s. Also skilled in freestyle and breaststroke. Began setting girls’ junior records in 1936. Established world record in 50-meter backstroke in 1941. Automobile accident in 1941 hurt career. World War II canceled Olympics in 1940 and 1944, the peak of her career. Attended Woman’s College (now UNC-Greensboro) and UNC. Broke many gender barriers. Native of Goldsboro. ~NC Sports of Hall Fame
