The Life of RAYMOND "DR JOCKO" HENDERSON


Detroit's Radio Blues Pioneer Disc Jockey Raymond Henderson passed away from a long health battle Wednesday March 25, 2015 at his home in the city of Inkster. He was 74.

Raymond Henderson was the evening disc jockey on WQBH Radio 1400/AM hosting "Blues with a Feeling" playing great blues hits from Muddy Waters to BB King.

Ray "Dr. Jocko" Henderson as he was known early in his career, was a dynamic personality with a broad following during the early '60s, Dr. Jocko was huge on WLLE 570 am. He is credited by many observers of that tense time of civil rights activities with promoting calm on the streets throughout the total community, black and white.

Later in his career, he was an executive with Motown Records where he traveled with James Brown as master of ceremonies and toured the nation and world when the Godfather of Soul was at the height of his illustrious career.  Ray Henderson was instrumental as creator and co-host of a television dance program called "The Scene" which aired daily on WGPR TV62.

Henderson was an outstanding athlete and a student at JW Ligon High School and carried those talents forward as a college student at St Augustine's University in Raleigh where he studied English and French.
